In less than 24 hours, 00100000b game developers in Perth will be taking part in Global Game Jam 2010. RocketHands will be there With Bells On. We're proud sponsors of the Perth event, and well chuffed that Perth was the one and only venue in Australia for last year's event (this year Sydney and Melbourne have rustled up a handful of participants, but Perth still remains, by far, the largest Australian gathering, and one of the larger of the 130 or so venues worldwide).

For the uninitiated, GGJ works like nyah:

  1. Rock up to the venue
  2. Watch a keynote video
  3. Learn the contraints (a theme, keyword or whatever)
  4. Pitch ideas and team up into groups
  5. Jam like crazy
  6. Once 48 hours have elapsed, upload your game and sleep

Last year the RocketHands crew helped create a few awesome games. We did so using tech that we were already familiar with: PyGame and The Kranzky Engine. This year we're pretty sure that we're going to spend the 'Jam learning a new tech from scratch. That's right, folks. It's time we learned to make browser-based games in the so-called "Flash".

We'll be pitting two game frameworks against each other: Flixel and the less well known FlashPunk. Apart from downloading these libraries (in case of flakey internet at the venue), I've done absolutely no preparation at all. Woohoo!

Oh, you should follow our progress on Twitter. Hashtag will be #ggj I reckon.
